If you don’t want this kind of stuff Mr. Spandex, you don’t have to buy it. That isn’t ripping off fans, it is creative marketing, and doing things for their fans nobody does. I’m diggin’ all the stuff I bought, I for one can’t wait for the merch store to reopen!!!

Spandex: If you can’t afford it, you can still buy the regular version. If it’s too expensive for you, then fine, choose a cheaper one.

There are actually many artists out there (Nine Inch Nails, Porcupine Tree, The Mars Volta +++) that care about the packaging and percieve the artwork as an inseparable component of the music. It doesn’t make them sell outs wanting to rip off their fans just because they want to offer an elaborate version of the album.

That’s there is so few copies: They are extremely expensive to produce and a LOT harder to sell than the regular version. Hence it implies a risk for Chimaira as well to make it. Offering so few is simply because they want to cover their bottomline and reduce the risk. I do not believe that the difference between profit and loss depends on these different versions.

Hell, you should be PROUD that one of your favourite band actually expose themselves to this risk for the fan base!

As I figured, all these fans are bunch of kids that just started listening to metal. I’ve been listening to metal for more than 20 years now, and I dare to say that most of the bands put out just a single version of the album. Why? Because not everybody has the money, nor everybody has their mommy and daddy pay for an overpriced piece of plastic. I just think is unfair for the people who bought the other two versions not to have a chance to win the contest. Everybody who is buying the album is supporting Chimaira, why not give all these people a chance? I even remember reading an interview with Mark Hunter where he stated that he didn’t like Roadrunner putting out two versions of the same album. How ironic is this?

And it’s not about being cheap, I probably make more money than some of you and I always try to support the bands I like. I even own all the Chimaira albums. I’m not rich in any way, but I’d never pay $100 bucks for a product like this.

C’mon… This isn’t COMMUNISM… They’re not just gonna limit everyone down to the same choice as everyone else, and what’s more, it’s not as if they are FORCING anyone to buy the $100 package in order to get the CD. THAT would (obviously) be crookery. But what they’re doing is allowing multiple options for people to get what they can/want. Some people can’t afford the $100 choice, so go for one of the more basic ones. Others maybe CAN afford the $100 package, but perhaps simply don’t WANT all that stuff, just want the CD. The point is, they give you the CHOICE. So, don’t feel as if you’re being forced into spending $100 on a CD to “prove” your a fan or any shit like that. We all know they deeply appreciate anything that their fans can and WISH to contribute. I doubt they want any of us to feel obligation over listening to their tunes…

And as for the golden tickets going with the $100 sets, hey, higher risk = higher reward. Simple economics. Just as no one is necessarily more of a Chimaira fan than anyone for having MORE money, so too is no one necessarily more of a Chimaira fan for having LESS money. That’s irrelevent to this case. All that’s going on is, if you happen to invest more into the band, you are more prone to get more back. And this isn’t to suggest that Chimaira would never give anything away to lesser wealthy fans, just that in this circumstance, perhaps they felt they ought to offer a bit more for fans spending as much as $100 for a CD and a few lil goodies. Don’t take offense to it.

Well, Roadrunner actually used to release another version of the album a whole year after the regular version was released. This is quite different, because many people would have bought the special version if it was available on the original release day, hence they ended up buying two versions of the album. THAT is a rip off, and I believe Hunter was referring to that.

Offering different versions simultaneously is a different matter, because then you are “free” to choose the ONE version you are willing to pay for.

Anyways, many fans just care about the music, and purchase/do not purchase thereafter, while others are collectors and care about packaging, artwork etc. Why not offer something to both segments?

And why offer this contest in all versions, if the ticket ends up with a guy who just purchased the album because a friend recommended it? Would that be fair to a die hard fan? Who do you think would appreciate this ticket the most?

And again, the economics: Yeah it would probably be nice if they could offer a huge elaborate package to everybody on the face of the earth to the price of 10 dollar. But unfortunately, such a solution is not possible without going bankrupt. Taking the current problems in the music industry into consideration, that kind of ideas are even more unrealistic.

Seems like spandex is right, not everyone can afford the box set. Its offered for those who can. And just because you’ve listened to metal for 20 years, doesn’t mean things haven’t changed. Most bands haven’t been around 20 years. And seeing a little innovation to excite fans isn’t punching a baby. So instead of crying over your only option of buying the cd. Why don’t you get a better job so when your mom kicks you out of the house, you will have a place to stay with all of your glorious $15 cd’s.

I can understand being disappointed about the box set being $100, but buying limited amounts of things raises the overhead where as buying 1,000,000 would get you a better deal. the band have to front the money for this project, so they take the risk of lose, not only that I would imagine that a part of the intake will be used to finance the contest and when you deduct the taxes that have to be paid on the sale of the product and split the rest between band members, not much is left over. No one works for free, this a business and nowadays bands don’t make money on selling cd´s due to the internet, they earn it through the sales of novelty items and t-shirt sales and concert ticket sales. my suggestion would be that the band offer platinum tickets, where the fans buy the opportunity to meet the band,then everyone would have a chance to meet the band, lots of artist are doing this as a way of earning extra income.
I live in Germany and cd´s here cost $26.50, so $8.99 for a cd is not much at all.
Hope the band can make it to Bremen Germany for a gig that would be awsome.
